We believe in an open social network
federating freedom
The buddycloud project is building a massively scaled open social network that everyone can use. Open because you can run your own node that federates with other nodes on the network. Open because we think your secrets are none of the government's business. Open because we want it on every devices and in every home.
The current social networks are a threat to freedom, democracy and can easily be shut down or censored. It's time for us to build an alternative that is encrypted, and difficult for governments to block. Distributed social networks have arrived.
The talk will look at the following technical areas:
- the challenges of building a privacy aware location system (sharing your place without sharing your location)
- building a federated system using XMPP and node.js
- building realtime web apps to support the instant updates
- steps you can take to build for a post-Facebook world
- integrating with Eben Moglen's FreedomBox
The talk will look at what the buddycloud project believes in and how buddycloud and other federated social network projects are working to bring real privacy to everyone.
